Planning Ecologist / Project Coordinator

Full-Time Permanent Position

This role will be focused on project coordination to support staff with respect to project timelines, operations (e.g., day-to-day task tracking), deliverables management, etc. and contribution to deliverables related to non-field technical work (e.g., impact assessment, report writing, policy interpretation, etc.). Some opportunity for fieldwork may occur to support projects but is not a requirement for the role.

Core strengths required for this position are critical thinking, problem solving, communication, interpersonal skills, writing, and organization. Other important characteristics include being curious (continuous learning and interest in understanding the ‘why’), an ability break down complex problems into manageable tasks, identify the key or critical issues, and attention to quality.

This role does require a foundation in ecology, biology or similar through education, experience, or both. A fundamental understanding of ecological principles is important to the role; experience with environmental policy (federal, provincial, municipal), impact assessment projects, environmental assessments, etc. would be very beneficial.

Generally, we see this as an intermediate-level position. However, our primary goal is to find the right person (core strengths), as such the final ‘level’ will be informed by the individual and their experience.

WHY CONSIDER NSE?

NSE is on a path of continual improvement. Not change for the sake of change (that gets real tiring, real quick), but recognizing that through ideas, be they from someone on the team or an external source, and continuing to ask 'is there a better way?' is how we learn, support our staff and feel rewarded in the work we do.

Our people are very important to us. As a small business, each member of our team has a meaningful impact, and we respect this as well as the individual. We continue to review how we work, strive to provide balance, and continue to develop a people-focused approach. We recognize that there are always ways to be better, and we regularly explore the next step on this path.

We have a strong history and are excited for our future. NSE was established in 1999 and has been providing high quality services to public and private sector clients, and to a lesser extent with NGOs, on a wide array of environmental projects for 20+ years. We are proud of this history and the contribution we’ve had, but we are focused on NSE’s future and where we and the industry are headed.

Experience with core tasks identified above is required. 3+ years of applied experience is preferred, but we are open to any level where key strengths are clearly demonstrated. Junior-level Ecologist

Full-Time Permanent Position

In this position you will be engaged on a variety of projects in a technical role including supporting or leading a range of ecological field surveys (commensurate with knowledge and experience), data management, report preparation, etc. Technical work will be primarily focused on terrestrial ecology (i.e., botany and wildlife), but is anticipated to include some aquatic ecology (fish & fish habitat).

Field identification skills for commonly occurring species by sight, sound, and spoor (e.g., plants, birds, amphibians, insects) will be important to success in this role. As such, individuals with greater existing skill level in these areas - obtained through personal effort, educational opportunities, volunteer work, work experience or a combination thereof - will be preferred. Knowledge of, or experience with aquatic ecology field surveys is also an asset (e.g., fish habitat assessments, electrofishing). NSE will support continued career and skills development through professional development activities.

Strong interpersonal skills, organization & attention to detail (e.g., field note and map preparation) are key attributes for this role. The position requires some flexibility to accommodate field survey schedules and conditions (i.e., for seasonal activities, time of day specific surveys, weather dependent field work timing, etc.) and project deadlines.
